You cannot see these words when you view the site - but the search engine spider can spot them easily! A spider is the program search engines use to index web pages, and when it sees these keywords, it goes back and increases that page's ranking.

The downside of this is that sometimes the spider is a bit heavy handed and will penalize a page by mistake. For example, if the background color of your page is blue, and you have placed blue text inside a white box, the spider will only take note of the blue text and assume you are using hidden text. To avoid any risk of false penalty, simply not to assign the same color to text as the background color of the page - EVER!

Another potential issue that can result in a penalty is called "keyword stuffing." It is important to have your keywords appear in the text on your page, but sometimes you can go a little overboard in your efforts to please those spiders. A search engine uses "Keyphrase Density" to determine if you are trying to artificially boost their ranking. If the density is too high the Search Engine will penalize your site.

The density ratio is difficult to exceed without your text sounding like "gobbledygook" - unless your keyword is part of your company name. Carefully edit the text on your site so that the copy flows naturally and the keyword is not repeated continually. The final potential risk factor is known as "cloaking." Cloaking is when the server directs a visitor to one page and a search engine spider to a different page. The page the spider sees is "cloaked" because it is invisible to regular traffic, and deliberately set-up to raise the site's search engine ranking. A cloaked page tries to feed the spider everything it needs to increase that page's ranking to the top of the list.

It's hard being a boat engine! Unlike its automotive cousins, a boat engine is run at extremely high RPM's and under quite a load when in operation and it sits in storage a whole lot of the time. It's kind of the worst of both worlds. Today's marine engines are very well made and unlike their predecessors, really experience very few mechanical problems if they are properly maintained.

Water Pump Maintenance - Most marine engines are cooled by their pumping of lake or ocean water into the engine from a pickup in the lower unit of the outdrive or outboard engine. This water is circulated by a water pump that contains a rubber or plastic impeller or fan which pulls the water from the lake and pumps it up and through the water jacket of the engine to keep things cool. As you might expect, there are sometimes impurities in the water or the operator (somebody else, I'm sure) that runs the lower unit aground and the impeller picks up sand, dirt or other grit. These foreign substances wear on the impeller and sometimes cause it to shred into pieces and fail. Also, if the engine is stored for a period of many months, sometimes the rubber of the impeller gets brittle and cracks up. In any event, it is simply a good idea to proactively replace the impeller every 3-4 boating seasons. If the impeller fails while you are running and you fail to notice the temperature rising, your engine can easily and quickly overheat and self destruct.

Oil Change – Marine engines are typically not run more than 60-80 hours per year and, therefore, do not require oil changes very frequently. Usually, it is a good idea to change the oil (and filter) once per year at the end of the season. If the old, dirty oil is in the crankcase when the engine is stored in the off season, it can turn acid and damage the internal engine components it is supposed to protect. Of course, 2 stroke outboards have no crankcase and therefore no oil to change. On these applications, it certainly does pay to stabilize any fuel remaining in the tank and to fog the engine with fogging oil before storage.

Fuel Injectors – Most newer marine engines are fuel injected and, when fuel is permitted to age and thicken during storage, the fuel injectors can easily become clogged and may fail at the start of the season. To avoid this occurrence, it is a good idea to run some fuel injector cleaner mixed into the last tank of fuel before the engine is put up for storage.

Battery – If you take care of your boat's battery, it will provide you with several years of good service. You should take care whenever you complete a voyage to ensure that all electrical components are turned off and, if you have a main battery switch, be certain that it is turned off. Whenever the boat is stored for any prolonged period of time, the battery cables should be disconnected.

Lower Unit Lubrication – The lower part of your outdrive or outboard engine is filled with a lubricant fluid that keeps all of the moving parts properly lubricated and running smoothly. The reservoir should never contain any water in the fluid. The drive should be inspected at least annually to ensure that the drive is full of fluid and that no water is present. This is relatively simple and inexpensive to accomplish.

Electronic Control Module – Most modern marine engines are controlled by a computer call an 'Electronic Control Module' (ECM) which regulates the flow of fuel and air as well as the timing of the ignition system. Another valuable function of the ECM is that it stores operational data while the engine is running. Certified marine mechanics have digital diagnostic tools which can be connected to the ECM to learn the running history of the engines as well as any problems.

Anodes On the underwater section of every outdrive and outboard engine, there are one or more little metal attachments called 'anodes'. They are usually made of zinc and are designed to attract stray electrolysis. Let me explain about the last statement first. The search engines that count do not list your web site. Let's take Google as the most important search engine on the internet, which it is, and even Yahoo cannot deny that. When Google crawls your website, it follows the navigation that you provide it with. It checks your home page and then every individual page that your navigation leads it to. If there are pages you don't want search engines to see, you can prevent that. I will show you how later.

Basically, the point is that Google lists individual web pages, not web sites. SEO, therefore, can be applied to each page of your site separately, and each page is listed in Google indices separately. The term 'indices' refers to each individual index for each search term used by a Google user who is searching for information. Each of your web pages will be listed differently for each search term.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the concept: Search engine optimization involves a variety of measures that can be taken in order to improve your web site's ranking in the search results of popular engines like Google and Yahoo. It's not black magic, sorcery, or voodoo — it's simply understanding how search engines "see" your website, and then adjusting your content to improve your rankings.

Most knowledgeable experts agree that the two most important elements of a successful SEO campaign are:

• Appropriately optimized, keyword-rich content

• A network of valuable web sites that link to your pages

Seems pretty simple, right? In fact, it is so misleadingly simple that it causes hoards of unqualified webmasters to spearhead their own optimization campaigns. These "campaigns" consist of jam-packing existing content with a top-performing keyword in every other sentence. Next, they exchange links with hundreds of other (unrelated) websites via link exchange networks … and then they wonder why their site ranking falls to the four billionth page of Google's results.

When people link back to you, this may confuse Google into categorizing your site as a popular, valuable resource of quality information. God forbid.

3. Put irrelevant information in your title tags, or better yet, leave them out altogether. Title tags are one of the main elements that search engines will consider when trying to figure out what your page is all about. Only a dimwit would make use of these title tags by infusing them with appropriate keywords and accurate descriptions. If you are still dead set on using title tags, make sure you make numerous references to "goat herding" and "lime juice." (Note: if your website is about goat herding or lime juice, skip this section.)

4. Steal content from other websites or remove useful content entirely. C'mon people, this is the internet, and we all know, the internet is no place to share unique and helpful information across a vast network of computers. If you absolutely must give visitors a reason to stay at your site, steal the content from someone else. Search engines are virtually incapable of detecting duplicate content and rarely penalize web sites that plagiarize. In fact, most of these webmasters are routinely rewarded with platters of fresh-baked oatmeal cookies.

5. Make sure you link to irrelevant websites with poor reputations. Before starting your optimization campaign, collect a list of the most irrelevant, horrid material the internet has to offer. Then litter your web site with links to these pages. Showing strong affiliation with less-than-reputable sites is admirable in the eyes of any search engine spider.

The truth is, all of these things are obviously very bad ideas. The more important truth is that Google can penalize you for a lot less than this.

That's why it's very important that you make sure you understand the "tried and true" tactics for search engine optimization before trying to optimize your own content. Making Your Site Search Engine Friendly - Spiderability

One of the keys to obtaining top rankings, or ANY rankings for that matter is making sure that the search engines can properly spider and index your site. This means doing whatever you can to make sure the search engines are able to reach each page of your site as easily as possible.

When I talk to my clients about spiderability, I'm generally referring to two things...

1) Are all the links in the site true hyperlinks that can be picked up properly by the search engines.

2) Are all the pages within the site reachable within 2-3 clicks from the homepage.

So let's go over the above two areas of concern.

1) Hyperlinks. This may seem almost silly, but you would be amazed at the number of sites I run into when doing consultations and website analyses that have non-standard hyperlinks. By "non-standard", I'm referring to javascript generated hyperlinks or hyperlinks embedded within flash files.

There is nothing inherently wrong with javascript or flash when used properly, but that simple fact is that javascript and flash are NOT search engine friendly. Google is pretty much the only engine that is able to pick up links within javascript or flash code. At this time, I have seen no evidence that either Yahoo or MSN have this ability.

While Google may be able to pick up links, it is unclear as to whether or not Google places any VALUE on the links it finds in this manner. Remember, much of a pages ranking in Google is determined by links so you want to be absolutely sure that each and every link is valued.

So, be absolutely sure that your links are true hyperlinks (by "true" hyperlinks, I'm talking about hyperlinks coded with the normal href tags) if you want to make sure they are found, followed, and counted by all the engines.

2) Distance from Homepage. Ideally, you want your visitors and the search engines to be able to reach any page within your site
within a maximum of three (3) clicks and preferably two clicks. The more clicks it takes to reach a page, the less chance there is that the search engines will index that page.

It is for this reason, that site maps have become so popular. By utilizing a sitemap, you are able to link from your homepage to a page that lists all or most of the links to the various pages of your site. The search engines (and visitors) are then able to get to virtually any page of your site within just a couple of clicks.

You'll notice I've mentioned not only the search engines but the visitors as well in the above paragraphs. By reducing the number of clicks it takes to get from your homepage to any page on your site, you will find that you also increase the overall usability of your site.

While site maps can definitely help to increase the spiderability of a site, it is important to remember that they are not a total fix for bad navigational structure within a site. As mentioned, all of the search engines utilize a pages link popularity in one way or another in their algorithms.

In general, the homepage of a site will have the highest link popularity of any page within the site. This is because most inbound links to a site are pointing to the homepage. It's from the homepage that all the internal pages derive their link popularity from a sort of "trickle down" affect.

A site map will only derive a certain amount of link popularity that it can pass on to the pages it links to. To understand this best, think of the homepage as a large river with each link on the homepage a smaller river branching off from the main river. Each river will be fed a similar amount of water by the main river. Alone one branch of the river will never be able to deliver as much water to the various areas as all the branches of the river can combined.

The site map is one branch of your sites link popularity river and it has value, but it will never have the same impact as a well throughout and implemented links structure that makes use of all the rivers of link popularity within your site.

To make the most use of the link popularity of your site, you should try and setup your sites navigational structure so that even without a site map, the search engines and visitors are STILL able to reach any page within your site within 2-3 clicks.

So...to make a long story short...Always be sure to utilize true, standard hyperlinks throughout your site and be sure that your sites navigational structure allows any page of your site to be reached within no more than 3 clicks.

Google, Yahoo, MSN, Alta Vista and so much more… There are so many search engines out there today that we sometimes don't know which one is the best, or which one we should use.

The reality is, Google is the dominating search engine and it didn't beat Yahoo for nothing. Google was the first to implement a conversion ratio together with click price in order to rank pay per click websites.

Every time you search on Google, ads appear on the right side of the page. Every time you click an ad like this, you are making Google money – and sometimes 1 click can make Google up to $5.

These are advertisers that have posted their advertisements for a per-click fee. Yahoo and many other search engines have this also – but in the traditional search engines, what made your advertisement be first on the page was your click price that you set.

So if Joe is advertising on a keyword for $2, but I advertise on the same keyword for $3, I'll be ranked higher than Joe.

The problem here, that Google fixed, is that people might prefer Joe's product to mine. So Google implemented a new way of ranking – mixing CTR and price per click. CTR is your click ratio – for example in 50 impressions, I get 5 clicks, which results in a 10% ratio. However if Joe gets 50 impressions with 10 clicks, he will have a 20% ratio.

A higher ratio means that the advertiser has given to the demand – if people click on the ad, it's because that's what they are looking for. Google has been trying to be the best at what they do, and they have done it.

So now, even if Joe is paying a dollar less than me, he will probably be ranked higher than me because he has a higher conversion.

Keyword Research - How to Create a Highly Effective Keyword List

Recently I was asked to optimize a site selling Spanish T-Shirts to attract lots of traffic from the search engines. Without traffic your site won't make any sales. Of the other hand getting lots of traffic does not guarantee sales if your web copy is lousy. There are many factors that should be considered when you optimize your web site. For my example site to optimize I chose Wild Lily Designs, a site that specializes in selling Spanish Shirts.

Here are the steps I took to optimize the site:

1. Create a keyword list

Write down all the keywords related to the topic of your site. Try to also include keyword phrases. ie T-Shirts, Spanish Shirts, Spanish Apparel, Spanish Clothing.

There are probably millions of web sites selling T-Shirts; therefore you need to narrow your focus. This is why Spanish Shirts or Spanish T-Shirts would a better niche because it wouldn't be as competitive. If your niche is too competitive you will have a difficult time getting high rankings. Ideally you want your site to appear on the first page for one of the major search engines...Google, MSN or Yahoo.

2. Find related keywords

These are words that are similar to the main keyword list you created above. You may be able to incorporate them into the content of your site as it grows. Keywords that have a very narrow focus ie Spanish T-Shirts, may not be a popular search term. If I broaden my search to include "Spanish" or "T-Shirt" I will find hundreds of words that relate to these topics.

Use a theosaurus dictionary or thesaurus.com to find similar words besides your main keywords. Another great free tool to brainstorm related keywords is the Google AdWords Keyword Tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal).

Here is the list of similar keywords generated when I inserted "spanish shirts" in the Google AdWords Keyword Tool:

From this list you get both the singular and plural forms of the keywords. You may also want to include madrid shirts, madrid t-shirt, spanish shirts.

To find out how often people are searching on these keywords you need to use keyword tools. I use a combination of both free and paid tools.

This isn't a story about how to create good linkbait, but how I attempted to apply what I learned from linkbait masters like Todd Malicoat & Nick Wilson.

I find that many search engine marketing articles that I read are affirmations…they either affirm something I already know (but perhaps hadn´t thought about) or, if I don´t agree with the article, they affirm that I´m correct and the author isn´t. However, every so often, I read articles that cause me to reexamine how I practice SEM. Reading Todd & Nick caused me to think critically about how I had been creating content for the web.

Background

I've been writing search engine articles regularly for a couple years now and I´ve always been able to see the nexus between writing and inbound link generation. Until recently, I subconsciously had connected generating links with writing prolifically. I had thought that my best performing articles such as "How To Be A Blogging Idol Instead Of An Idle Blogger" likely did well because I hooked readers with a catchy title and was able to meld disparate elements of knowledge together in a way that readers liked and recommended to others.

So, in mid January, I consciously sat down and tried to write an article worthy of what I just learned. What I ended up writing had nothing to do with SEO…in fact; it was one of those "What Event Most Influenced the Course of Your Life" stories that tend to be extremely tiresome and self-indulgent. At first, I thought I had wasted my afternoon. Yet, I had a strong feeling that my article was not only by far the best thing I´d ever written but might have some level of universal appeal. Armed with the urgency of DIFY (not family safe) and quite a bit of WTF, I attempted to linkbait a very personal article.

You see, the story I wrote concerned my personal transcendence that occurred as I sat approximately 100 feet from Marvin Gaye while he sang the definitive version of the National Anthem at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game. With the 2007 NBA All-Star game scheduled for mid-February, I thought the timing of my story was pretty good for an All-Star linkbait.

What I Did

I first wrote a brief email arguing why my story was worthy of publication. Then, inspired by what Rand narrowly failed to do (get his commercial to run during the Super Bowl), I submitted my story to the biggest sports news outlets I could find: ESPN.com and TheSportingNews.com. Sportswriter email addresses are readily available, and I emailed my message & story to many folks that I read on a regular basis. At both websites, one of the basketball writers forwarded my story to the appropriate online editor…so I was able to successfully reach the decision-maker fairly quickly.

Both wrote me personal emails turning the story down. Both told me I had written the story one year too early (the Silver Anniversary of Marvin's Anthem is in 2008). The Sporting News editor liked the story but thought it a bit long for their format. The ESPN.com editor openly praised what I had written and we had a nice email exchange where he was quite helpful in giving me advice and suggestions on where else I could place the story.

I had also made contact with Duane Forrester aka Sportsguy who does SEM for a sports content provider in addition to being a SEMPO officer. He generously answered my unsolicited message and passed my story onto his editorial folks…unfortunately also without success. Similar attempts with other extremely large media companies also met the same fate and by then, the All-Star game had already occurred.

What I Learned

It would have been great if my story ran on ESPN.com. However, that was a totally unreasonable expectation. What I should have done and will do now is reach out to niche bloggers / content providers that are more accessible to me and are more likely to recognize my work. I will gradually build more links to the story over time, generating search engine strength and bringing the story more readers. I will also use my story as an opportunity to lose my social media virginity by exploring those currently unfamiliar channels and learn how they can compliment my other SEM efforts. Perhaps by the beginning of 2008, my story might have built a big enough mindshare that a major content provider like ESPN.com would be more likely to run it. Or, by then, it might not even matter to me.
